The Coast Road Rocks

The BBC have reported that the Coast road has been closed because of rock falls.

The A2 road is closed near Garron Point outside Carnlough.

Ride It Right Chairman Trevor Baird says, “The Coast Road may rock for riders during the summer months and good weather.”

“The first real riding days for hibernating riders may be months away but riders should be prepared for every eventuality, even falling rocks”.

A councillor has called for a geological survey after a road in county Antrim was closed because of falling rocks.

Part of the A2 road at Garron Point near Carnlough is closed after the third rock fall in the area in little more than a month.

The latest fall happened despite Roads Service giving the area the all-clear.

The road will be closed for a week.

Local councillor Oliver McMullan, who set the groundwork for Ride It Right, said geological expertise was needed.

He said: “The rocks are right on the edge of the road and the only place they can fall is on to the road itself.

“I think we need to look at this from an engineering point of view and come up with another solution.”

Oliver also suggested that wire netting should be attached to the rock face, an idea that has been successfully used in Scotland.

The Traffic Watch Northern Ireland Website provided by Northern Ireland Roads Service to relay traffic information to the public reports that:

The A2 Shore Road has been closed just north of Carnlough village at Garron Point due to a small rockfall . A diversionary route has been signed using the adjacent Tower Road. It is likely that the road will remain closed until early next week.
