Historic Vehicles MoT

At Right To Ride we reported recently that we were waiting for the outcome of the Northern Ireland consultation on the exemption of historic vehicles from MoT.

This followed a public consultation in both Northern Ireland and GB with the DfT (Department for Transport) GB announcing an exemption.

Vehicles manufactured before 1960 will be exempted from the MoT test from 18th November 2012, reducing costs for owners, while owners of affected vehicles will still be able to take exempt vehicles for an MoT test on a voluntary basis in GB.

Last week we received a reply from the Northern Ireland Department responsible.

The conclusion from the consultation responses to a possible exemption of certain categories of historic vehicles from MOT testing was that they indicated a broad support for exemption of pre-1960 vehicles from periodic testing.

Meanwhile Sammy Wilson MP MLA passed on a response from Alex Attwood Minister of the Environment which stated:

That further to the Department for Transport’s decision to exempt historic vehicles from MOT in Britain the Environment Committee, at its meeting on 22 March 2012, considered the synopsis of responses to the Department’s recent consultation on possible exemption of certain categories of historic vehicles from MOT testing.

The responses indicated that there is broad support for exemption of pre-1960 vehicles from periodic testing.

The Committee was content with the Department’s proposed way forward, which is to develop policy on the basis of the consultation responses that would make use of the exemption in Roadworthiness Directive 2009/40/EC concerning the periodic testing of pre-1960 vehicles.

The Department is progressing its detailed consideration of the appropriate way forward to ensure that the requirements of the Directive are met in the detail of the policy.

Watch this space for further announcements for when this comes into effect.
