First Aid Beyond Belfast

Members of the Top Dead Centre MCC www.topdeadcentremcc.com took part in the latest First Aid For Riders course to learn and practice First Aid specific for motorcycle casualties. The course was delivered by the St John Ambulance at their Belfast Headquarters at Knockbracken Healthcare Park

Training includes emphasis at the scene of a collision that your own safety is paramount as well as dealing with the process of:

  • helmet removal
  • breathing difficulty
  • not breathing
  • vomiting
  • clearing airways
  • and communication which is important between those on scene

The course also covers other “ordinary” aspects of First Aid, which include:

  • bandaging
  • choking
  • breathing conscious
  • non-breathing unconscious casualty
  • recovery position
  • head and spinal injuries
  • CPR – Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • chest compressions with and without  rescue breaths (using the ever willing medical-training mannequin, Resusci Anne)

Our thanks to the St John Ambulance personnel for making the courses available and our trainer to date, Alan Irwin, for the down to earth facts and easy to understand terminology and for training the participants in the course.

St John House in Ballymena

As successful delegates, the attendees will receive a St John Ambulance (NI) certificate that is valid for three years.

St John Ambulance will provide all delegates who successfully pass the course with Associate Membership Insurance cover for the duration of the validity of their training qualification.

This insurance covers students against claims arising from first aid they may have delivered outside of their workplace, responsibilities and when not covered by employer’s (or any other) insurance.

On completing the course attendees receive the St John Ambulance First aid student pack and a First Aid certificate which will be posted out.
