Ride It Right – Coast Road

“Ride It Right” launches a new initiative and event concerning motorcycle issues and the A2 Antrim Coast Road.

Prompted by two motorcycle fatalities in the Moyle area in April 2009, of which one was on the A2 “Coast Road”, motorcyclists were invited to attend meetings by Councillor Oliver McMullan, Chairman of the Moyle District Policing Partnership (DPP).

The outcome of these meetings was the “Ride It Right” initiative, including a website to promote the new group and the launch of an event for riders.

Chairman of “Ride It Right”, Trevor Baird said, “There is public concern regarding motorcycles and the concentration of riders on the coast road, both in the “rural” and “urban” areas. These may be subjective but are genuine for the local population, who may suffer noise intrusion and quality of life issues.”

“It is a fact that the majority of riders treat the coast road and other vehicle users with respect and they should not be identified as “the problem”. There is however, a minority of riders whose attitude is to use the Coast Road as a weekend race track. Their actions are what are remembered by the public, residents and other users of the Coast Road”

The “Ride It Right” event takes place on Sunday 30th August at Cushendall 10.30 a.m. and finishes at 3.30 pm. Entry is free with a prize draw for top prizes!

Riders will be asked to ride the Coast Road and fill in a Road Survey Card to highlight those places along the road that they think are a danger. Bikesafe will offer free assessments for anybody who wishes to improve their road riding techniques, with exhibitions by key Road Safety Agencies and other organizations.

Our main objective is to find a way forward by improving motorcycle safety in the context of looking at the dynamics of the Coast Road and adjoining feeder roads, which is for the benefit of all road users.

The second objective is to expand the “Ride it Right” initiative by identifying “biker routes” across the province with input from riders, agencies and relevant organisations.
