In 2000  the initial launch of Bikesafe took place at a conference in Scarborough.

The conference discussed the BIKE SAFE experience, motorcycle culture and motorcycle safety and was attended by sixty police officers from constabularies around the country including two officers from the RUC Traffic Branch and representatives of the motorcycle community.

The aims of the conference were to achieve a better mutual understanding of the problems and offer a way forward to address the problems of the motorcycle accident rates.

Ten years later,  Bikesafe is now recognised throughout the motorcycling community as an important tool for rider assessment.

What’s It About

Bikesafe recognises that rider’s are a passionate breed, and care deeply about  bikes and the enjoyment derived from them.

The Bikesafe initiative is based on professional riding techniques and is designed to enhance the skills of riders who have already passed their test.

Topics covered include how to control your bike, the common factors which lead to a collision and how to keep your bike security.

Good riders will be asked to use a ‘Riding Plan’, which poses a number of simple, but revealing, questions:

• What can I see?

• What can’t I see?

• What is likely going to happen?

• What can I do about it?

Although it is particularly suitable for riders  making a return to biking after a period of absence, as well as sports bike riders, the one-hour assessment is also open to anyone who rides a smaller commuter bike or scooter.

One of the main lessons you will learn will be how to identify your mistakes and bad habits, their consequences and how you can correct them.

All Bikesafe NI assessments are FREE – Bikesafe NI is a Rider Skills Assessment – based on professional riding techniques and is designed to enhance the skills of riders who have already passed their test.

What It’s Not About

Bikesafe is not about learning how to pop wheelies or grind your knee slider into atoms – it’s about fostering a more responsible attitude towards your riding.

All Bikesafe NI assessments are FREE, and are conducted by an Advanced Police motorcyclist, with years of experience behind them.

Bikesafe NI is a Rider Skills Assessment – not Advanced Training.
