I hate the helmet removal policy, I've been asked at tesco's to remove before entering the store; whats the difference between an OPEN helmet and a large hat and dark glasses. yes, NOTHING.

Options- take it off, now I'm caring me £400 helmet, getting bashed by plebs, unable to pick things up.

- leave it on your bike, yes soon be someone else's.
- put it in your basket, yes i do and only buy half of what i need, tesco's loss (and mine).
- go some where else, worth a though.

I think we should sod the rules and have an arguement EVERY time, they'll soon get pissed off.

I have no problem removing my helmet for anyone tho i have only been asked once to do it one in an asian shop and after i had handed over the monies. I asked if anyone wearing a Burka would be required to remove it and got no answer, so left my helmet on [it was a flip up open face anyway] and took my change and left, never to go into that shop again.

The latest i heard was that filling with petrol, the fumes given off can sometimes find there way into ones helmet, particularly if one is astride the bike at the time [perhaps more likely to ride off after filling] so they are generally advising riders to remove helmets for safety sake. Tho the petrol suppliers have made a statement that there is no problem as they can see supporting the retailer to come to that conclusion.

Thanks Bob for your comments.

There will always be possible senarios if the dot is missing or perhaps the placing of the dot on the helmet may help.

The tax disc idea was as far, as I am aware, a back up to the dot.

So worse case no tax disc and the dot is missing.

Re the warning danger onthe sticker of the danger of removing a helmet, personally I do not think that this should on the helmet.

I have completed a First Aid For Riders course www.firstaodforriders.org which included helmet removal.

My own personal opinion is if I am faced with two casualties, when doing an initial assesment for response and I see a sticker saying "Do Not Remove Helmet" I will go to the other casualty. first.

I have often considered the single green dot a problem if it is scraped off or otherwise lost during an accident. Two dots would do better.

Some riders do not display their tax discs anymore for fear of having them stolen, so thats another problem.

Quite right warning of the danger of removing a crash helmet. It should only be done by the emergency services when they arrive, unless of course the casualty is not breathing and extending the head and neck doesnt work. under those circumstance, no matter what other injury to the neck may be suspected. rescucitation must be given and the helmet removed for that purpose, unless it a flip front.

I quite agree and have complained bitterly to some local authorities re such reckless road surface treatments. As u say it is false economy as it lasts only a quarter of the years a properly re surfaced road would.

However providing that we are considered only 1 % or all traffic in terms of volume absolutely nothing will be done about it.

Its that same old arguement re say passenger airlines, the manufacturers and operators know that there is a specific problem but the cost of putting right the problem is far to expensive when considered against the cost of insurance payout for death or serious injury.

In the meantime we have to suffer.

There maybe hope, however, in that as cycling is becoming the be all and end all of the green side of politics and is receiving much more government support and finance [by licking rather than biting,] then maybe, just maybe we can support them, afterall we are cousins of a sort, and by supporting them maybe they can complain.!!!!!!!

[ does anyone know of a cyclist that is in the lobbying business?]

Bikers – ride yourself into the record books

15th May 2012

Original source IAM

Belfast will see a world record attempt for the most number of makes and models of motorcycles in a single parade. The IAM Titanic World Record Challenge will take place on Friday 22 June.

Motorcyclists from road safety charity the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) are inviting Ireland’s bikers to join them and ride their way into the record books. The current record is 138 makes and models at an event organised by the KillSpills Campaign in 2007.

The parade organised by the Quay Vipers Motorcycle Club, will assemble near the slipway where the world’s most famous ship Titanic was built and adjacent to the new iconic building and exhibition centre Titanic, Belfast. The attempt will follow a two-mile route to the City Hall and back again to the starting point for a bikers’ barbecue. The world record attempt will be started by local boxing hero Wayne Pocket McCullough, Olympic silver medallist and former WBC Bantamweight and Commonwealth champion.

Other sponsors of this event are Adelaide Insurance Services, Days Hotel, Stena Line and Bikesafe.

The record attempt will begin at 7pm and is part of a week-long tour of Britain and Ireland to raise awareness of road safety and money for charity.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: “It doesn’t matter if you have a 1200cc Harley of a 50cc moped, we want to see as many two-wheelers as possible join us so that we smash the world record. It’s for a great cause and will also be a terrific night out. “

Riders can sign up for the world-record team Click Here

Notes for editors:

1. The IAM is the UK’s largest independent road safety charity, dedicated to improving standards and safety in driving, motorcycling and cycling. The commercial division of the IAM operates through its occupational driver training company IAM Drive & Survive. The IAM has more than 200 local volunteer groups and over 100,000 members in the UK and Ireland. It is best known for the advanced driving test and the advanced driving, motorcycling and cycling courses. Its policy and research division offers advice and expertise on road safety.

Guidance has been given to farmers by way of the NFUonline .com

Its a problem all over the mainland. Whilst many complain about cow shit its basically the agri farms that are worse.

at least with cow muck u can expect it every day and at regular times all the year round and it generally doesnt require or involve any farm vehicles.

With agri farming crops they have every vehicle under the sun out and with trailers, bloody great big ones with all sorts of dangerous spikes and disk blades, enough to cut up motorcyclists into several pieces, i know of one that was decapitated by such a blade. also they are out as early in the year as possible to prepare land and cover it with shit [ manure] and then seed it and then de weed and spray it and then reap it later on in the summer and they work round the clock even into night time with tractors going from field to field.

If that isnt all they just drop whatever is on their wheels onto the tarmac and put out a poor hand written notice warning of mud, one which inevitably falls over or is washed away by the next downpoor.

When complained about the police or local authorities do shit all about it, lets face it as far as they are concerned we deserve all the pain ,suffering and death we can get. one less KSI statistic.for the future.

It appears that the police did suffer by what the farmer did not do and so got taken to court.

Lets hope more are prosecuted for their outright beligerance.

Nice one.

As a footnote... beware when the crops are being harvested JULY/AUG/SEPT. havesting creats a lot of fine dust and broken stems and chaff to fall on the road, This is lethal as it creats a barrier between the road tarmack and your tyres. Its very much like ice. Also if not protecting the eyes it can blind you when blown by the wind.

So if any farm nearby is harvesting be very, very carefull it can put u off the road and into hospital.

You have been warned.

Put it in the Highway Code

Put it on your local website.

put it everywhere.

Its not a very well known fact and persons have come to grief and the police have put it down to rider error.

please make sure all your friends know about it.

On the lighter side, i was down a country lane the other day and a farmer had put up a notice saying.'BULLS BEWARE.....KEEP OUT. Now i never new that bulls could read, did u.!!!!!!

Off course there will be the oportunity to respond to these proposals in the forth coming published consultation.
