Bikesafe – What’s It About
Bikesafe recognises that rider’s are a passionate breed, and care deeply about bikes and the enjoyment derived from them.
The Bikesafe initiative is based on professional riding techniques and is designed to enhance the skills of riders who have already passed their test.
Topics covered include how to control your bike, the common factors which lead to a collision and how to keep your bike security.
Good riders will be asked to use a ‘Riding Plan’, which poses a number of simple, but revealing, questions:
What can I see?
What can’t I see?
What is likely going to happen?
What can I do about it?
Although it is particularly suitable for riders making a return to biking after a period of absence, as well as sports bike riders, the one-hour assessment is also open to anyone who rides a smaller commuter bike or scooter.
One of the main lessons you will learn will be how to identify your mistakes and bad habits, their consequences and how you can correct them.

You said that the bike safe is offered to all bikers in your videos but you don’t give it to learners why is that I have been ride now for 4 years and would love to do the bike safe I have ask about it but was told that it not for learners I feed that learners are beening discriminated becouse we are just learners I know that it use to be give to learners and then it stop . Also why is there never any awareness posters put up around town and at junctions and at roundabout at this time of the year . Rosie

The video on the website is not ours but is from Bikesafe in Northern Ireland what reasons were you given why Bikesafe is not for learner riders?
As the text says – “The Bikesafe initiative is based on professional riding techniques and is designed to enhance the skills of riders who have already passed their test”, so is not set up for learner riders.
Learner riders would perhaps not have yet received sufficient training or experience to ride the assessment, which takes riders up to the maximum speed limit on rural roads.
As far as I am aware this would be the same as regards the IAM http://www.iam.org.uk/riders/riders-courses and RoSPA http://www.roadar.org/riders/index.htm to get riders to take advanced riding with Bikesafe seen as a stepping stone to this. One might say it is a graduated system – learn to ride – pass your test – get an assessment by Bikesafe – take your advanced test.
If you have been riding for four years and are still a learner then you are either or over 24years of age and have hot taken your Direct Access test and are taking CBT (Compulsory Basic Training)every two years. Or you have a licence category eg A1 small bike licence/A2 medium bike licence and are still progressing to get your full bike licence – A category.
I am not aware that Bikesafe (Northern Ireland) was ever given to learner riders, it is certainly not discriminatory. You need to progress to your full bike licence, receive all the necessary training from yor AMI (Authorised Motorcycle Instructor) with their wealth of experience and enjoy riding and built your own experience up.
Regarding the awareness poster I don’t know why there are awareness posters around towns and at junctions and roundabouts. One might say why should we need these as drivers should be aware and should be trained to not only look but to see riders. Although we are working to get bike aware posters on motorcycle routes with a dual message for riders to be aware of the roads and for drivers to be aware of riders.
